Cultural Aspect of SLA:
Input, Output, and Communication

Cultural Aspects @ una elementary:

  • Languages present: Spanish, Arabic, other Asian and African languages.

  • Cultures: mainly Hispanic and Arabic, a few Asian and African students

  • The similarities between English and Spanish help those student succed in learning English.

  • The drive of our Arabic students help them excell in English despite the many differences in languages.

  • Tip: display pictures from the countries your students for from in the classroom to promote pride in cultures.

Input

  • Input usually comes from a native speaker. Input in a classroom setting is giving clear comprehensible information that learners will use to develop English. On top of providing academic information, I give small grammer lessons and teach the correct way to use English

  • Tip: Teachers should use language that is age appropriate and just beyond a students langauge level.

Output
  • Output is when learners use the rules and vocabulary of a second languge to speak. They are experimenting and putting into practice all that they have learned. Output is very importand and crucial to second language acqisition becuase part of acquiring a language is speaking and communicating through L2.
  • Tip: As students learn to speak, provide feedback, encouragement, and priase. Actively listen by giving your whole attention.

Role of Interaction
  • Interaction invovles input and output. Interaction is conversation. The more interaction a learners gets in the L2 environment, the better he/she can understand and speak that language. Interaction is so important that some believe people a language is learned through interaction. I beliveve that my young kingergarten students learn through social interaction.
  • Tip: Use cooperative groups to foster interaction.

Comprehension
  • Input, output, and interaction together lead to comprehension of a language. Input needs to be understood. Input allows learners to figure at the rules of a langauge. Output begins by putting those rules into practice. Interaction occurs allowing the learners language to continue to progress. The more a learner interacts, the more fluent they become. Comprehension is understanding the spoken language and being able to speak. I would consider comprehension to be at the proficient or fluent level.
  • Tip: Ask specific questions for comprehension, not just "do you understand?"
